BIGSSS faculty member and former postdoc has been appointed Professor for Social Data Science at Jacobs University

As of this academic year, Jan Lorenz is Professor of Social Data Science at Jacobs University. Jan Lorenz is a mathematician by training and a social scientist. He received his PhD in mathematics from the University of Bremen on modeling and simulating opinion dynamics in social processes. He remains interested in data-oriented social science, especially the design of electoral systems. Thus, as part of his habilitation, he analyzed, among other things, Bremen's 5-vote electoral system.

For BIGSSS, Jan Lorenz is not a new face. He was a Postdoc Fellow at BIGSSS and joined the faculty in 2016. He supervises and advises BIGSSS fellows, especially on methodological issues related to computational social data analysis and visualization. Thus, He has also been a member of the BIGSSS Methods Center since this year. As the main organizer, Jan Lorenz initiated the BIGSSS Computational Social Sciences Summer Schools, which took place from 2018 to 2022 and were funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. Jan Lorenz has also been active at Jacobs University for quite some time. Since 2012, he has been working on various research projects and serving as a lecturer.

We congratulate Jan Lorenz on starting his professorship at Jacobs University and are happy to have him on our faculty!
