The book explores the mobilization for violent politicized Islam and the motivations of former participants in al-Shabaab.
We are excited to announce the publication of a new book, "Mobilization for Violent Politicized Islam; Motivations of Former Participants in al-Shabaab”, which examines the involvement of Kenyan individuals in al-Shabaab, a Somalia-based affiliate of Al-Qaeda.
It is built on empirical data from some Kenyan individuals who were involved in al-Shabaab – an affiliate of Al-Qaeda that is based in Somalia. Their personal accounts of involvement offer the opportunity to understand, not only Kenyan politics but also, how al-Shabaab utilized existing opportunities and religion (Islam) to mobilize them into the group. It also contextualizes the often-overemphasized factor of “ideology” in radicalization literature by demonstrating how the politicization of religion is enabled by contextual factors. The book concludes by calling for political reform, inclusion and an understanding of security from a human perspective as opposed to militarization.
